WP App Review : Bomberman vs Zombies

Bomberman vs Zombies  (Version 1.1)
TECHSOFT VENTURES LTD
$0.99 / Free

The original Bomberman was an entertaining game on the original NES where you guided your character through a maze like labyrinth, using bombs to destroy crates and blobs of enemies as you make your way to the exit. The basic premise of the game is fairly simple and addicting and has thus sprouted dozens of similar games; Bomberman vs Zombies is one of them.

In this version, you guide your character through the maze like map and must kill all the enemies before a hatch opens and you're able to make your exit, onto the next map. Controls are based on a fixed d-pad which works really well; I didn't have any real problems where I felt like controlling the character was troublesome. To the bottom right is the button to place your bomb.

As you progress through the stage trying to kill, as well as avoid enemies, you can destroy the many crates found to uncover different power-ups. There are also downgrades and hidden enemies mixed in as well, so you'll need to watch your step. Your basic upgrades include faster movement speed, ability to lay more bombs at once, as well as a bomb switch so that you can manually activate the bomb, perfect for faster and random moving enemies.

Zombie enemies vary from slow moving ones, bouncing skulls, warping zombies, flying bats, and more. The stages are relatively straightforward but increase in difficulty due to crate placement and amount of enemies. There is a save system included as well so you don't have to worry about losing all your progress. Graphics are nice and clean and overall, the game play is solid and entertaining and the controls work really well.

The one downfall which may hinder your playing is the way the screen scrolls from top to bottom. Sometimes when you make your way to the top or bottom of the map, the screen will take a few seconds to scroll, blocking your view of potential enemies. Normally, the screen will automatically scroll, albeit a bit slow, but sometimes it just takes a while to register which may disrupt your flow of playing the game.

Pros : Solid, easy controls, clean graphics, save system
Cons : Automatic screen scrolling is sometimes a bit slow to activate
