WP App Update : Snes8x

Snes8x has been updated to 1.0.2.0. A button setting called "dissecting" and "intersecting" has been added, but I don't really see a difference. Adjustments for the size of the buttons/d-pad are still unavailable as well as a much needed portrait mode. So it's still difficult to play action games when your fingers cover up most of the screen.

Scan the QR code below or click here to download/get the update.

WP App Review : geoDefense Swarm

geoDefense Swarm (Version 1.0)
Microsoft Studios
$2.99

geoDefense Swarm is a tower defense game based on vector style graphics. It's an older game, one that I previously played on iOS. The game play is addicting so I decided to purchase it on WP as well, and just like it's iOS counterpart, it plays well and is highly addictive.

WP App Review : CONN3CT

CONN3CT (Version 1.0)
DiNoGames
Free

CONN3CT is a fun puzzle game where your objective is to match three or more blocks of the same color which are adjacent to each other. Similar to most other games of this type, it's a race against time to match as many as you can within the time allotted. However, CONN3CT gives you the opportunity to extend your game playing time by activating certain blocks.

WP App Review : Sparks

Sparks (Version 1.1)
ICE Software
Free

Sparks is a simple game where you guide a light orb through narrow passageways, collecting items and power-ups, lighting torches, and fighting enemies. Simple art-style accompanies the simple game play which is overall a solid experience. Nothing ground-breaking, but a fun game nonetheless.

WP App Review : Robotek

Robotek (Version 2.6.8.22)
David Peroutka
Free

Robotek is an aesthetically pleasing turn based role-playing game featuring wonderfully colorful visuals. There are three main actions you are allowed to make during your battles, forcing you to make strategic choices as you decide to attack or defend. The overall game play is simple, yet very addictive.

WP App Review : MangaTronic

MangaTronic (Version 1.2.2)
Djooleean
Free

MangaTronic is a newly released photo app which turns your regular photos into manga (Japanese comics.) I originally saw this app in the marketplace a few days ago but didn't bother to download it the first time around. However I decided to give it a try and was pretty amazed at how well it renders photos into a nice manga art style.

WP App Review : Jewel 3

Jewel 3 (Version 2.9.9.2)
Stormtek Games
Free

There are multitudes of match-three type of games in the marketplace, all of which pretty much have the same game concept. I've always enjoyed Bejeweled but with the absurd price of $6.99, I searched for an alternative and have come to enjoy Jewel 3 the most.

WP App Review : ProShot

ProShot  (Version 2.0)
Rise Up Games
$1.99

As a photography enthusiast, I always enjoy taking a look at the different camera apps found in the market. ProShot has been given some decent reviews so I decided to check it out for myself. What you get with this app is the ability to manually control some of your camera functions as well as have easy access to these adjustments, just like a real DSLR.

WP App Review : Speedtest.net

Speedtest.net (Version 1.0)
Ookla
Free

Ookla's Speedtest.net can be seen as a standard for your basic network speed testing. I've used their website a lot of times to test the speed connection of my cable internet at home and when I had my iPhone I used their app to test the speed of the 3G network in my area. Ookla has finally released their app for WP8 and gives users a chance to test their network speed, whether it's wi-fi, 3G, 4G, or LTE.

WP App Review : Paper Rush

Paper Dash (Version 1.1)
Random Salad Games LLC
Free

Paper Dash is an updated take on the classic NES game, Paperboy where you're in control of a newspaper-delivering teenager riding a bicycle. Your sole purpose is to deliver the newspapers to all the subscribers as you dodge obstacles in the form of traffic cones, potholes, dogs, etc.

WP App Review : TextTextRevolution!

TextTextRevolution! (Version 1.15)
dimar
Free

TextTextRevolution!, no doubt named after the rhythm/dance game Dance Dance Revolution, is a text-based "game" where random words are given and you have to type them out as quickly as you can. As soon as you correctly type the word, the next word appears. You basically type as fast as you can to spell out as many words in the allotted time.

WP App Review : 3D Brutal Chase

3D Brutal Chase (Version 2.2.0.1)
Mutant Bear Games
Free

3D Brutal Chase is an arcade style car game where you take control of a police car and your main objective is to "crash" into enemy cars until they become "busted." It's a rather simple concept but in short doses can provide some mindless, yet entertaining fun.

WP App Review : Bomberman vs Zombies

Bomberman vs Zombies  (Version 1.1)
TECHSOFT VENTURES LTD
$0.99 / Free

The original Bomberman was an entertaining game on the original NES where you guided your character through a maze like labyrinth, using bombs to destroy crates and blobs of enemies as you make your way to the exit. The basic premise of the game is fairly simple and addicting and has thus sprouted dozens of similar games; Bomberman vs Zombies is one of them.

Review : Smartphone Add-On Lens Kit

Photography has always been of hobby of mine, easily spending over thousands of dollars on DSLR bodies and lenses. When I had the iPhone, the ability to take beautiful photos on the go was a welcome addition to compliment my hobby. With the Lumia 920, the camera was one of the deciding factors in purchasing the phone so of course I've been playing around with the camera frequently.

These add-on lenses have been out on the market for quite some time but I never got the urge to try them out when I had the iPhone. However, this time with the stellar performance of the Lumia 920 camera, I decided to pick them up to spur some creativity.

WP App Update : Snes8x

Snes8x has already been updated with improved touch controls.

The new update makes running and jumping (holding Y and pressing B to jump) a whole easier. This makes playing the games like Super Mario a lot easier. Still, the button layout remains the same and covers a large portion of the screen. The update also removes the setting to adjust the button size.

WP App Review : Snes8x

Snes8x (Version 1.1.4)
m.k
Free

If you're a fan of classics games, then emulators are the way to go. There's a handful of emulator apps for Windows Phone such as vNESLight which I've reviewed, along with Purple Cherry which emulates Game Boy Color and Blue Tomato which emulates the Sega Master System/Game Gear. Snes8x emulates the SNES console and it does it amazingly well.

WP App Review : TiltShiftGen

TiltShiftGen (Version 1.0)
Art & Mobile
$1.49

When I had my iPhone, TiltShiftGen was pretty much my go-to photography app. I had SnapSneed, Instagram, LoMob, Hipstamatic, and all those other popular photo apps but TiltShiftGen provided simple adjustments with a good tilt-shift effect and the photos always came out wonderfully.

It's extremely popular on iOS but it seems like it doesn't get much recognition in the Microsoft store which is a shame. Since it's not too popular, it took me a while to realize this app was available in the MSFT store but after lots of browsing in the photo category I was happy to see it was available.

WP App Update : Jewel3 and ProShot

I'll have a review of Jewel3 up shortly and I've only played around with the basic features of ProShot's free version so far but they both have new updates. I'll be purchasing ProShot and have a review of it up as soon as I get some free time.

In the meantime, if you have either of these apps, hit the jump for the QR codes.

WP App Review : Metro Lines

Metro Lines (Version 1.4)
SquareRootMinusOne
Free

Metro Lines is a simple matching game based on a grid-style board. Circles in different colors are randomly placed on the board and you need to move one circle at a time. In your basic easy mode, once you match three circles of the same color either vertically, horizontally, or sideways in a set of three or more, the circles will clear. If you successfully clear a set of circles you can then move another circle. If your move results in no match, then a few more random circles will appear.

WP App Review : Where's My Water?

Where's My Water?  (Version 1.0.4)
Disney
$0.99

Disney's Where's My Water? features pretty much the same exact game play as their other app, Where's My Perry? I'm pretty sure Where's My Water? was out first since I remember seeing it when I had my iPhone; but in either case, both games are highly entertaining.

WP App Review : Where's My Perry?

Where's My Perry? (Version 1.0.2)
Disney
$0.99

Disney's Where's My Perry? has been a steady top-rated app for a while but for some reason I just never got around to checking it out. Since they're currently offering it free, along with their other app Where's My Water?, I decided to download both.

Where's My Perry? is a fun puzzle game where you must use touch gestures to dig through dirt and guide a pool of water to a container so that Perry the platypus can travel through a pipe and progress to the next stage. Like many other similar puzzle games of this type, the premise is simple, but as you progress further along there are variations and puzzle-like elements in the stages that make it more difficult to guide the water to it's intended destination.

WP App Review : Dredd vs Zombies

Dredd vs Zombies (Version 1.6)
Rebellion
Free

Publisher Rebellion sure seems to know how to make solid mobile games. They currently only have two games on the market but they're both extremely well polished. Dredd vs Zombies was the first of their offerings which I actually tried out. In this game you control your character through a small map as you navigate your way through corridors filled with spawning zombies. There is a ton of action and a bit of strategy and the overall experience leaves you wanting more.

WP App Review : Guns4Hire

Guns 4 Hire (Version 1.4.10)
Rebellion
Free

The marketplace has it's share of great games, but once in a while there is a game which fully showcases what's capable on smartphones of today. Guns4Hire is a visually stunning strategy shooter which would not look out of place on console or PC. The beautiful graphics combined with excellent game play and lots of customization make this game worth taking a look at.

Google Maps returns to Windows Phone

For those keeping track of the Google vs Microsoft battle regarding Google Maps, it seems that Google has re-activated access to Windows Phone users. Google first claimed that Google Maps wasn't compatible with mobile IE, then said it was running performance tests. Whatever the reason, access seems to be restored for now ...

WP App Review : Hey DJ!

Hey DJ! (Version 2.1)
Diego Carlomagno
$1.49 / Free

The smartphone is becoming more and more integrated into the car driving experience nowadays as many people use it as their main media player or navigation tool with your basic hard-wired connection via cable or wireless Bluetooth connectivity. As such, there are plenty of apps designed to make the smartphone experience while driving easier and safer. Hey DJ! is one of these apps which uses voice commands to control your music.

WP App Review : CarTunes

CarTunes (Version 2.1)
Tidhar Nitzan
$0.99

CarTunes is a relatively old app with the last update in late 2011. However, coming from iOS it's the closest app I could get to FluxTunes, which was the main music app I used in the car, and the now discontinued FlickTunes. If you're not familiar with these apps, they provide a simple interface with swipe gestures to play/pause, foward/rewind, shuffle, change playlists, etc. - perfect for controlling your music while driving, or any other activity where you can't readily concentrate on navigation menus and small buttons.

WP App Review : Galaga Legions DX

Galaga Legions DX (Version 1.0)
Namco Bandai Games
$0.99 - $6.99

If you're the type to scroll through the games list quickly in the marketplace and make instant judgement based on the star rating, you'll probably skip pass this app. There is a main reason for all the low ratings, but despite the first impression that the rating gives you and what most reviewers will say is a horrible game, I'll go against the norm and say that Galaga Legions DX is a decent game.

WP App Review : Chromatic Pro

Chromatic Pro  (Version 2.0)
Hennessy Apps
$0.99

Chromatic is a wonderfully executed shooter using vector style graphics which I am a big fan of. The premise is simple and straightfoward; you control a cannon at the bottom of the screen and as waves of enemies in various shapes and colors rain down from the top, you tap on any position on the screen to fire in their direction to ensure they don't reach the bottom. Despite it's simple design, Chromatic will likely get you hooked with a few rounds of play as you try to survive longer and longer.

WP App Review : CastleMine Free

CastleMine Free (Version 1.1)
Diffraction Studios
$0.99 / Free

One of the more popular genres in smartphone games are tower defense games. CastleMine takes the standard tower defense formula but adds in a few nice features such as collecting various items during gameplay as well as adding a skill tree which you use to upgrade your towers as you progress through the game. As indicated by the title, it also takes a different approach in terms of how the game is viewed while played - instead of the usual fixed screen or side-scroll, your playing field expands downward into the ground as you protect your Castle.

Nokia's System QR Codes

Nokia has a few system "apps" which are periodically updated to improve certain phone features. Unfortunately there is no way to actually search for them in the marketplace. However, you can use the following QR codes so that you can check and update these "apps" right away instead of waiting for the push notifications.

Google vs. Microsoft *UPDATE*

The release of Windows Phone 8 brought along a bunch of new users who use many of Google's products. Google has a big presence on the internet so it's no doubt that a lot of internet users make use of their various products as such Gmail, Google Maps, Google Calendars, Google Drive, and more. Unfortunately, Google seems intent to prevent these users from easily using their products on their new Microsoft device.

Initially, Google made a statement that they wouldn't be concentrating on releasing their mobile apps on Windows Phone 8, all of which are readily available on iOS and of course, Android, due to the low marketshare. Google then stated that they would stop support for CalDAV, an internet standard for syncing, which would render Google Calendar useless for new users.

And now more recently, they seem to have blocked access to Google Maps via the mobile Internet Explorer web browser.

WP App Review : Photo Shader

NOTE: This review has been updated at the bottom.

Photo Shader (Version 2.2)
Ryken Apps
$0.99

If you're a photography enthusiast like me, you'll probably want a photography app that does a bit more than the usual photo filters and basic adjustments found in most apps. Photo Shader is one of those apps. Aside from the usual brightness, contrast, saturation, exposure, etc. adjustments, there are more advanced effects like glow, soften, color picker, and blur effects.

WP App Review : vNESLight Pro

vNESLight Pro
 (Version 1.2)
Nudua
$0.99 / Free

It's funny how even with the latest gaming technology, people tend to have the desire to play some old school games. I grew up in the era of the NES so these classic games have a special spot in my memory. With vNESLight, playing almost any NES classic on the go is possible.

WP App Review : Nokia Creative Studio

Creative Studio (Version 4.1.2.4)
Nokia
Free

Nowadays, a camera is an integral part of the smartphone experience and as an avid photography enthusiast, camera apps were one of the first things I searched for in the marketplace. Since Nokia is pushing their camera performance they of course have a simple photo editing app in Creative Studio.

WP App Review : 2150 A.D.

2150 A.D.
 (Version 1.3)
Lumosoft
Free

2150 A.D. is an entertaining top down shooter where you are in control of a spacecraft, shooting down asteroids and various enemy ships. Featuring solid graphics, each stage is a "mission" where your goal is to gather a certain amount of crystals, avoid asteroids, or shoot down a certain number of enemies. Each mission ends when your fuel runs out.
Currently, the map area for each stage is all the same and relatively small, the only differences being the number of asteroids and enemies appearing. Despite the somewhat repetitiveness of each stage, it is a nicely polished game with wonderful graphics and smooth game play and controls which can make it addicting.

WP App Review : MetroTalk

MetroTalk
 (Version 3.1.1)
apoelin
$1.49 / Free

After I initially received my Nokia Lumia 920, AT&T screwed up when transferring both my unlimited data and unlimited messaging plan. Since customer support was worthless in helping me, I had to go into an AT&T store to get it sorted out. During the few days of downtime, I was able to use the phone over wifi and decided to try out some text messaging apps. One of the criteria was being able to text others without the recipient having the same app. The choices were limited and I eventually settled on using Google Voice as the main client.

Review : Nokia Lumia 920

Happy New Year!

For the first post on this blog, it's only appropriate to cover the device which prompted me to start this blog, the Nokia Lumia 920. As a background, I was never really a big mobile phone user. I remember the first mobile phone I purchased was the Nokia 5110, an extremely popular device during my younger years. As smartphones started to enter the market, I didn't take too much notice and after using other various "flip" phones, I got my first smartphone, the Samsung Blackjack II. By then, the Apple iPhone was already a big hit and with the smartphone becoming a part of daily life I finally jumped onto the bandwagon and purchased the Apple iPhone 3GS.

Using the iPhone was a great experience; the user interface, the apps, and the performance were all beyond expectations. A few years later I upgraded to the iPhone 4 which was another huge improvement. When the iPhone 5 was announced, I was set to upgrade yet again. However, come launch day I found myself losing interest and decided to wait it out for the next model iPhone. Don't get me wrong - I love the iPhone and it did everything I wanted in a smartphone. But after a while, it started to get a bit stale.
